An Epic Adventure to Lake Toba Uncovers Volcanic Wonders & Batak Culture with Journey Into Wild Sumatra!

Get ready to step into one of the world’s greatest natural wonders: Lake Toba! Formed by a giant volcanic eruption millions of years ago, Lake Toba is the world’s largest volcanic lake and a haven for lovers of serenity and culture. Journey Into Wild Sumatra takes you on an unforgettable journey from Bukit Lawang to experience a slightly cooler beauty (located 900 meters above sea level) and explore the richness of unique Batak culture.

Journey to Wonder (Day Trip)

Departure from Bukit Lawang: Journey Into Wild Sumatra’s expert guide will pick you up from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang.

Enchanting Overland Journey: Enjoy a journey of approximately seven hours that offers views of the diverse landscapes of North Sumatra, to Parapat, the main gateway to Lake Toba.

Crossing to Samosir Island: From Parapat, we will take a passenger ferry (approximately 45 minutes) across the calm blue waters of Lake Toba, to Samosir Island, the spiritual heart and an important icon of Batak culture. Feel the breeze and admire the vastness of the lake.

Arrival in Tuktuk: Our destination in Samosir is Tuktuk, the island’s tourist center, where the main accommodation is located. The arrival time allows you to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere after the journey.

Samosir Island is a treasure trove of culture and nature waiting to be explored. With Journey Into Wild Sumatra, you will:

Explore Batak Villages: Visit traditional villages such as Ambarita with its ancient Stone Chairs believed to have served as the tribe’s court, and Tomok with the tombs of pre-Christian kings.
Witness Living Culture: Visit the Batak Museum in Simanindo and watch a mesmerizing Tor-Tor Dance performance. Interact with the friendly and welcoming locals, hear legends, or even try playing the traditional Gondang Batak musical instrument.
Nature Adventure: Enjoy some time relaxing by the lake, swimming in its cool water, or try the thrill of Canoeing and Paddleboarding to enjoy the beauty of Lake Toba from a water perspective.
Motorbike Adventure: Rent a scooter or motorbike and explore the island’s roads that offer stunning views, peaceful villages, and the chance to stop at local cafes or scenic viewpoints.
Hiking & Hot Springs: For hiking enthusiasts, there are several trails around Samosir and the surrounding mainland. Don’t miss the Tele Observation Tower for panoramic views of the entire lake, or soak in the hot springs in Pangururan which are heated by geothermal activity.
Enjoying Batak Cuisine: Sample the deliciousness of Batak cuisine such as Arsik (carp seasoned with andaliman), Saksang (pork with spices and blood sauce), or the vegetarian-friendly Sayur Ubi Tumbuk. Although Tuktuk has more Western dishes, you can find these authentic dishes in the Pangururan area. Don’t forget the tuak wine, a local Batak drink!

After a peaceful breakfast, you will board the ferry back to Parapat.
From Parapat, the Journey Into Wild Sumatra driver will be ready to take you to your next destination (Medan, Bukit Lawang, or other destinations)
